Catawba Indian Pottery Dog Ashtray Rock Hill SC signed
Information that I learned from the Archivist from the Catawba Nation in Rockhill, SC:
The piece was made in the traditional manner, by hand rubbing and burnishing, without the use of glazes or kiln. I was told that the piece was likely produced for sale, probably in the 1950s-1960s but it could be as old as the 1930's. I was told that pieces made for sale at this time were often not signed and that unfortunately, the level of education among Catawba's on the Old Reservation was often poor, which could easily explain the misspelling.
I am not an expert in this area by any means, so please ask questions before bidding/purchasing.
Thank you - Debbie!!!
