opening
This is a beautiful piece of pottery with some unfortunate damage. The most visible is that one of the handles looks like it ripped off, and is missing completely. The remaining handle has a 1” hairline crack along it’s left side. There are some small chips scattered around, some maybe from being hit and some maybe from tiny rocks in the clay. The outermost edge around the pot has some wear to the painted parts, which is an orange and black bird grasping at a flower on the front and back. The bottom ring has wear around the signature.
The last flaw of note is some red writing close to the bottom, in a red wax pencil. Usually, I can remove that type of mark completely by wiping it with a paper towel with some Goo Gone on it. It works great for brass, glass, plastic, and smooth glazed ceramic. However, the surface of this pot has little crazing everywhere, and my fear is that I will wipe most of it off, but also stain red into the crazing. Due to that, I have left it alone.
