DESCRIPTION:
Striking, early hand coiled and hand painted miniature pottery jar by award winning Santa Clara potters Margaret and Luther Gutierrez. This likely dates to the late 1960s - 70s era. The jar is thick-walled and quite sturdy. The piece is signed with the names Margaret and Luther separated by a horizontal line. The signature is worn and very difficult to read but you can make out some of it.
This spectacular little pot measures about 2 1/4" in diameter and 1 7/8" high. It features striking geometric designs in dark red, light red, white and blue-gray that drape down from the top on a buff colored background that covers the top 2/3 to 3/4 of the jar. The deftness of the decoration on such a small piece is quite remarkable. I understand that all the various colors used are derived from native clay slips and it was this polychrome style (i.e. more than 3 colors of clay) for which they were renowned.
Margaret Gutierrez (born 1936-) and Luther Gutierrez (1911–1987) were brother and sister potters from the Santa Clara pueblo, NM. They continued the polychrome style of painting made famous by their parents Lela and Van Gutierrez. They learned the art from their parents and began making pottery together in the 1960s.
No chips or cracks, but there are some scratches and rubs in the red color near the bottom of the vase (see close-up pictures). Also, the signatures are very hard to make out.

Great piece of Native American Indian art, a hand-painted bear with the symbol for mountains on the sides. I love his face, his smile is sweet. The bear symbol is one of the most common signs in the Native American tribes. This animal is thought to have magical and healing powers and is used as a bear medicine being. They see it as an emblem of strength and wisdom and use the spirit animal bear in various divine ceremonies.
5.5" tall, 8.5" long, 2.25" wide. Some minor flaws, see photos. Piece is marked Baha on the bottom.
