Double Diamond Ganado Navajo weave
, by Kathryn Kenneth
I'm the original owner of this very nice Ganado Navajo weave by Kathryn Kenneth, of the Crownpoint Weavers Association (Crownpoint, NM, ENE of Gallup), famous for its monthly auctions going back decades.
It was purchased in 1998 at a showing of weaves done at a restaurant for several weeks just off the edge of the downtown area in Colorado Springs, in conjunction with the Table Rock Trading Co. (who's still around if you do a search).
I've enjoyed it for two decades and am parting with it to make room on the wall for other Navajo weaves in my collection which are 'living' rolled up in the closet, so I'm hoping it will go to a good home where it will be similarly appreciated for a long time. This is the only Ganado style weave I've ever owned.
The weave measures out at 25" x 33", with 9½ warp per inch horizonally, and 28 weft per inch vertically. Both side edges have the extra nice touch of black selvage cords. It weighs 19½ ounces, which is just shy of five 4 oz. skeins of yarn, and at 170 sq.in. per skein I'm almost certain it's woven from worsted weight yarn. Wool, of course. I can't tell whether it's handspun or machine spun yarn, though I suspect the latter is more likely, from the overall look and feel.
It's done in pure Ganado style, with the only colors being black, white, Ganado red, and four shades of grey (two of which have a slightly bluish tint). The pictures pretty accurately show these, as well as the high quality of the weave, though the red came out a little too bright in a couple of the flash close-ups.
This is obviously the work of a very skilled, accomplished and imaginative weaver, and I was drawn to it by its unique design, a combination of both new and traditional elements.
The entire weaving is in very good to excellent condition, with no flaws. Shipping will be in a sturdy poster tube by USPS Parcel Select.
Wonderful Storm Pattern, Spider Woman, Navajo rug. Weaver is Navajo Rose Big Horse, who is also Spider Woman. Purchased in Flagstaff, AZ. Great design and weaving. Hand woven. 44" x 31". Spider Woman in center of rug. Fade spot on left side of photos is from the camera, not the rug.
