Grace Nez, Wide Ruins Rug, Navajo Handwoven, 30 1/2" x 47"
Wide Ruins, Arizona had a trading post where vegetal dyes were encouraged in rugs. That, along with the demand for excellence in the weaving has led many collectors to desire these fine rugs. Navajo weaver Grace Nez wove this large branded rug. It reflects the awesome colors of the Wide Ruins area, enjoy. Before the trains started coming to this part of the world and businesses like the Fred Harvey Company started selling Navajo jewelry to the masses, most people back east didn't know anything of the Navajo. Traders like JB Moore would be one of the first to introduce the art of the Navajo to collectors back east, rugs not silver. He put together a catalog of different weavings that would be sold in large quantities. More Traders would begin to introduce Navajo weavings and even influence certain styles. Today this tradition is carried on by the Trading Posts. We have a large collection of weavings from classic Ganado Reds to Germantown Revivals. Also, old antiques that have the character that goes with age to the new contemporary weavings. Enjoy looking through our online collection, and remember if you don't see what you are looking for we have many more in the Post.

90" x 52"
One owner, well-kept, browning on wall hanging part in back but the front of the rug appears to be in perfect condition, see pics, most likely bought in New Mexico as a tourist, it's from my husband's grandparents house who were born in 1910s
Grandmother told my mother-in-law that the pictoral rug depicts sick warriors who are going to see the medicine man which is why they have pink faces, I am not sure if it is Navajo or another tribe but it is definitely not antique and was woven as a decorative piece. The background is white not cream which makes it brighter and newer looking than the kilims I have seen
Brown spots on back (second picture) but front is in excellent condition (first picture)
