Pottery Serpent VASE

Nicolasa
Naranjo (1907-2002) was a famous Santa Clara Pueblo pottery artist from New
Mexico and the daughter of Tomacita and Agapito Naranjo,
granddaughter of Sara Fina Tafoya and a cousin
of Margaret Tafoya. In her later career, after 1946, she collaborated with her
daughter Roberta.
She
has been recognized for her pottery making, mostly blackware.
The piece has a beautiful etching of a black
on black avanyu serpent around the base and signed on the bottom.
No chips or cracks. There is minimal finish
wear, some in the making as they are
traditionally
hand built with coils of native clay, stone burnished and reverse painted.
There are
some scratches so please
review the photos, no chips or cracks. Perfect condition inside.
Avanyu
is the water serpent deity of the Pueblo tribes of Arizona and New Mexico,
often depicted on San Ildefonso and Santa Clara Pueblo pottery. The Avanyu
symbolizes the importance of water to indigenous desert cultures and also
associated with lightning as shown by the serpent’s tongue.
Nicolasa’s
work is in the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.
