Coal Mine Mesa
Navajo rugs
are known for their unusual
raised outline
technique, where the joins between the pattern motifs are thick and rise above the rug's surface. Typically, weavers using this technique also alternate two contrasting colors of single weft threads. As the weaver tamps the wool into the warp, these wefts appear to be thin stripes that run parallel to each warp thread. The Coal Mine Mesa trading post no longer exists. The former trading post area is now part of the Hopi Reservation, having been reallocated from the Navajo to the Hopi during the 1974 Navajo-Hopi Land Settlement Act
